For over a millennium, the Silk Road was not just a trade route. It was the nervous system of the ancient world — a network of paths across deserts, mountains, and steppes along which silk, spices, jade, and ideas moved between China and the civilizations of Central Asia, Persia, Arabia, and Rome.

Chinese silk was so prized in the ancient world that it was used as currency, as tribute, and as a symbol of civilization itself. The loom that produced it was a closely guarded secret for centuries.
