THREADS OF FORTUNE: Maedeup · Norigae is a contemporary tribute to the Korean art of maedeup (매듭) — traditional decorative knot-making — and the norigae (노리개), an ornament historically worn with the hanbok.
The artwork captures the craft at its most human: a pair of hands gathering individual strands of red, indigo and gold, carefully drawing them together into an intricate knot. Below, a jade-toned ornament and flowing crimson tassel complete the composition, transforming loose threads into something intentional, balanced and enduring.
Rather than recreating a single historical norigae, the piece focuses on the tradition behind it — the patience, precision and knowledge required to transform thread into meaning.
During Korea’s Joseon period, norigae became one of the most distinctive ornaments worn with women’s hanbok. Their materials, knots and decorative elements varied, allowing craftsmanship and personal expression to exist within the same object. Behind each finished piece was the practice of maedeup, passed from one pair of hands to another through generations.
At its heart, Threads of Fortune is about connection.
A knot holds because its individual strands remain intertwined. In the same way, identity is shaped by the people, places, memories and traditions we continue to carry with us.
