A tribute to Japan after dark.

YATAI: Taste of the Night captures the warmth, energy, and intimacy of Japanese street-food culture through lantern light, rising steam, ramen, yakitori, and the quiet rhythm of a cook at work.

The artwork does not recreate one exact street or city. Instead, it brings together the feeling of Japan’s late-night food stalls into a single visual memory — the glow of paper lanterns, broth in the air, smoke from the grill, crowded counters, and food prepared only a few feet away.

屋台 — Yatai refers to Japan’s traditional mobile or temporary food stalls. Often associated with evening dining, they create a uniquely intimate experience where cooking, conversation, and the movement of the street exist in the same small space.

The composition brings two familiar expressions of Japanese food culture into the foreground:

ラーメン — Ramen
A steaming bowl of noodles, broth, pork, egg, and carefully arranged toppings.

焼き鳥 — Yakitori
Grilled chicken skewers closely connected with casual Japanese dining and late-night food culture.

Behind them, the yatai scene gives the piece its human element: the cook behind the counter, diners gathered nearby, glowing lanterns, weathered wood, steam, and the atmosphere of a night still unfolding.

The palette of black ink, vermilion, warm amber, and earthy tones draws from fire, wood, lantern light, and the darkness of the street. Irregular painted edges allow the artwork to fade naturally into the garment, giving the scene the feeling of a memory rather than a framed illustration.

At its heart, YATAI is about the way a place can stay with us through taste.

Some destinations are remembered through monuments. Others return through something much smaller — the smell of broth, the heat of a grill, the sound of conversation, or a meal eaten beneath warm lanterns after sunset.
